Explore Fluvanna’s Pottery Heritage
The Fluvanna Community Historical Society, and the Pearl City Clay House, invite you to explore an important chapter in Chautauqua's early history through a program focused on Fluvanna and southern Chautauqua County's pottery tradition and its lasting connection to the community.
In the early 1800s, Fluvanna was home to a thriving pottery industry, supported by the availability of local clay and the needs of a growing region. These early efforts helped shape the local economy and left behind a legacy that remains part of the area’s identity today.
A Visual History Presentation
This program will begin with a free history talk, open to all, featuring guest speaker Vince Martonis, an expert in regional redware pottery and the local potters who supplied early settlers in Chautauqua County.

Includes admission to the free history presentation AND participation in the hands-on pottery workshop to create one pottery piece. Create your own piece of history using locally sourced clay, with all materials, instruction, and kiln firing provided. Families and friends are welcome to work together on a shared pottery piece. Additional pottery pieces require an additional workshop registration. Note: This option includes both the history presentation and one pottery project.
