DATES: March 4th and 5th (to view times available, click "Book Now") ***NEW ROUTE, SHORTER RIDE OPTION and JOIN US IN OUR HEATED MEETING HOUSE*** Experience what it was like for our forefathers (and foremothers!) to travel in the deep, cold months of winter. Over 180 years ago, Samuel Whittemore set out with his horse and "cutter" (i.e., a small sleigh) to visit every home in Fluvanna and the surrounding countryside. His mission: to rebuild the community's Meeting House. Join us as we relive this event by taking a short sleigh ride through the heart of our community. Weather permitting, each sleigh ride will start at Fluvanna's historic Meeting House, pass by the graveyard, glide through the woods and cross over the open fields before making our way back to the Meeting House. Along the way, you'll get a glimpse how things used to be in the 1800s. The crisp, cold air, the thud of hoof beats, the sound of the sleigh whisking through the snow and the tintinnabulation of the bells will transport each rider back to our community as it existed in the nineteenth century. As we retrace our history, we'll provide more information about Samuel Whittemore, the rebuilding of Fluvanna's Meeting House, the difference between a "cutter" and a "sleigh," and how - like our ancestors 180+ years ago - we're working now to save our Meeting House as a place where each person in our community has a place and belongs. Join us for this truly unique experience. You may book up to four seats per time slot. Due to the size of the cutter only one passenger (or two small passengers) may ride at a time and each sleigh ride will last approximately five minutes. Sleigh rides depend upon the weather. Not enough snow for sleigh riding? No problem! We'll offer horse-drawn cart rides instead. FCHS will contact participants via email and txt message with updates.
